McGill's expands with McColl's takeover

McGill’s, Scotland’s biggest independent bus operator, has announced further expansion with agreement to acquire the bus operations of McColl's of Dumbarton. McGill's will acquire 30 buses and will offer employment to all 35 existing employees of McColl's – the trading name of Loch Lomond Bus Services Ltd. The £3million deal will be completed in early December and gives McGill's a new base north of the River Clyde. Its current operations are centred around Greenock and Paisley, south of the river.

Ralph Roberts, managing director of McGill’s, says: “We are delighted to have concluded this deal with McColl’s. The acquisition fits well with our growth targets and expansion plans for McGill’s. From 10 December, McGill’s will operate all existing McColl’s services under the McGill’s name.

“The extension of our network to include Alexandria, Balloch, Helensburgh and Clydebank complements our current service provision in West Dunbartonshire. From 10 December, McGill’s will offer passengers access to an extended network on modern, clean, 100 per cent super-low floor buses.”

Liam McColl adds: “Given the current economic climate, we have decided to focus our efforts on the quality coach hire and school contracts side of our business. We believe that the McGill’s business model will serve our local passengers well. I would like to thank our regular customers for their loyalty over the years.” Earlier this year McColl's withdrew a number of routes serving central Glasgow, but introduced new services in the Balloch area. The major operator in the towns on the north bank of the Clyde is First Glasgow.
McGill's expanded in the spring of this year when it acquired the Arriva Scotland West business.
