Scania confirms further S-Kool orders

Article Image

WITH ITS first Scania K94 S-Kool coach just entering service, Newport Transport has shown its commitment to the concept by ordering a further six.

The S-Kool coach is based on the 3.2m-high Irizar InterCentury body and has 70-seats in a three-plus-two layout, all with three-point belts.

Newport's first S-Kool is being used to serve two schools where there have in the past been problems with pupil behaviour, and is replacing an elderly double-deck bus.

Newport Transport managing director Trevor Roberts acknowledges that behaviour is a serious problem, both for his drivers and for the safety of pupils and the public. "We've had a lot of vandalism on school services," he says. "The cost of replacing broken glass alone amounts to £150,000. But safety is the main reason we have gone for the S-Kool coach."

Scania has received orders for a further nine S-Kool coaches from four other operators.
