Green facility for red buses in West Ham

Article Image

What is claimed to be Britain’s biggest and greenest bus garage at West Ham, East London, has been officially opened by David Brown, Transport for London’s managing director for surface transport.

The garage has a range of environmentally-friendly features, including a wind turbine and a “living roof” planted with sedum. It can hold up to 320 buses and is used by the East London Bus Group.

The garage is predicted to cut CO2 emissions by 27 per cent compared to a building built with traditional materials. The 100kW wind turbine will produce 10 per cent of the garage’s energy needs. Other features include a system which collects rain water from the roof which is used to flush toilets, and biomass boilers and combined heat and power units which reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
