Fifty hybrids ordered for London

Article Image

Transport for London has finally announced its first major hybrid bus requirement, with 50 vehicles coming from Alexander Dennis and Volvo, funded under the Green Bus programme. By the end of 2011 TfL anticipates having 300 hybrids in service, with all new buses from 2012 being hybrids.

Alexander Dennis is to supply 30 vehicles – 20 for London United and 10 for Metroline. Volvo will supply 20 to Arriva. The routes to which the buses will be allocated have yet to be decided. All are expected to be delivered this year.

Mike Weston, London Buses operations director, says: “London is leading the way on hybrid buses as we continue our contribution to improving the fuel efficiency of our vehicles, helping to improve air quality and cut the capital’s CO2 emissions. We will now be able to almost double the number of these green vehicles on the roads and by 2012 all new buses coming on to London’s roads will be hybrids.”

There are currently 56 hybrid buses operating in London, and a further six are on order from Wrightbus to allow the complete conversion of route 360 to hybrids; it is currently operated by a mixture of hybrids and diesels.
