Optare out of Routemaster race

Optare has announced that it’s no longer in the running to produce London’s new Routemaster and says that its design team can now devote time to its integrated Olympus double-decker, which will be based on a new Optare chassis designed to accept a range of power sources. The first of three pre-production Mercedes-powered Olympuses is now in build.

Transport for London is to make an announcement next month on the builder of the new Routemaster.

It is understood that ADL and Wrightbus are on the shortlist, and that the final design will be closer to mainstream bus models than the original concepts with a conventional front-end layout with the entrance ahead of the front axle.
