Birmingham bus crime crackdown

Police have launched a two-week crackdown on crime on buses in and around Birmingham. It started last week to coincide with the return to school, and will combat the seasonal rise in robbery and anti-social behaviour which traditionally occurs in September. More than 60 officers will be working with Birmingham city council, bus companies and Centro, the West Midlands PTE, to help protect children going back to school.

Inspector Cate Webb-Jones, from the West Midland Police’s Safer Travel team, says: “There is often a rise in theft and violent crime at this time of year, often because there are a lot of new school pupils who may be using the bus network for the first time on their own.

“It’s really important to us to make sure that they everyone knows how to keep themselves and their belongings safe and also for us to address any unacceptable behaviour on the buses.”
