600+ vehicle order for Arriva operations

ARRIVA has ordered 320 new buses for its UK fleets, and almost 300 for its operations in Europe, marking an investment of over £84million. Over two-thirds of the new UK vehicles – 221 – are for the company’s fleets in London and the south-east of England (the Shires and Essex), with the remainder for its operations elsewhere in England.

The orders include a boost for Alexander Dennis, with 60 Pointer Darts and 72 double-deck bodies on Volvo B7TL chassis. New types for Arriva are Scania OmniCitys, with 14 ordered for operation in north-east England and Ayats open-top double-deck tour buses, ten of which are being delivered to Arriva’s London sightseeing fleet.

Apart from the specialised Ayats vehicles there are 114 double-deckers, of which 102 are for London and 12 for provincial fleets. These include the first Wrightbus Pulsar Geminis for operation outside London – 10 vehicles for Arriva North West. Arriva North West also gets 42 VDL/Wrightbus Cadet minibuses.

The company has also placed a substantial repeat order for Mercedes-Benz Citaros, taking 46 articulated examples for operation in London. That Arriva has stayed loyal to Mercedes, despite last year’s widely publicised vehicle fires, is a blow for Volvo which last year demonstrated a B7L artic with Hispano bodywork to Arriva and other London fleets in the hope of securing a share of the capital’s articulated bus orders.

No new buses are on order for Arriva’s Scottish fleet.

David Martin, group managing director – operations for Arriva, says: “Across Europe we work in a number of different operating environments and the investment principally reflects the winning of new tenders.

“Where we decide to locate these new vehicles in the UK will be determined by how best they will be received and the benefits that local authorities and Arriva working in partnership can secure for bus passengers.”
