New delay for Swansea ftr

Article Image

THE introduction of First’s ftr service to Swansea has been put back to late May. It was previously planned for April, and had originally been scheduled to start last autumn.

The latest delay has been caused by hold-ups in preparing the infrastructure for the system. The Wrightbus StreetCars for the service – being promoted by First as ftrmetro - were completed 18 months ago, with some currently in operation in Luton.

Tony McNiff, managing director of First Cymru, says: “We have been working to recruit a team of pilots for ftrmetro and very soon they will begin the specialised training which will be required for the sophisticated ftr vehicles.

“The vehicles are ready for delivery and it is anticipated that the first of them will be arriving towards the end of March. This is as soon as the new servicing facilities now being constructed at Ravenhill depot have been completed.”

As happened with the ftr service in Leeds, First Cymru is planning a phased introduction of the StreetCars to Swansea, to be completed by the end of August. The service requires ten buses.
