Irish fleets plan 10 per cent cuts

Article Image

Dublin Bus is to cut 290 jobs and reduce its fleet by 120 buses in a move to cut costs. And sister company Bus Eireann is axing around 300 jobs and 150 vehicles. The cuts, which represent a fleet reduction of around 10 per cent, are planned for 1 March. They are being made against a backdrop of a fall in passenger numbers as the Irish economy contracts.

Bus Eireann says passenger numbers dropped by 4 per cent in 2008, and it expects a further reduction this year.
Both companies are part of the state-owned CIE organisation.

SIPTU, the Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union, has said it will resist compulsory redundancies at Dublin Bus. SIPTU Dublin Bus branch president Tony Fallon says: “SIPTU will consider the company’s proposals and our representatives will consult extensively with members to formulate a considered, informed response.

“We can advise members now that we will not accept compulsory redundancies, but we will explore all other avenues, including considering alternative proposals that will ensure the stability and survival of the company and protect the working conditions of employees.”
