Leeds considering trolleybuses

Article Image

Proposals for a three-route New Generation Transport service have been shown to people in Leeds in an exhibition staged last week by Metro, the West Yorkshire PTE, and Leeds city council. It is also conducting an online survey until 9 January.

Accepting that trams are not currently affordable, Metro says that NGT would deliver many of the benefits of a tram system within the available funding. NGT would use a network of bus lanes supported by traffic light priority. The vehicles could be trolleybuses – first proposed by the PTE over 20 years ago – or hybrid or diesel buses. NGT illustrates a Lyon trolleybus and a First StreetCar as representing its aspirations.

It plans to submit a business case for NGT to the Department of Transport next summer. If funding is agreed, construction could start in 2012, with the first vehicles running from 2014.
