Environment first at Euro Bus Expo

IF there’s one single issue underpinning this week’s Euro Bus Expo event, it’s the Big E. No, not the economy, stupid, to misquote former US president Bill Clinton. Worrying as the economy may be, it’s the environment we are focussing on.

Most of the leading bus manufacturers who are active in the UK are exhibiting hybrid buses, and most of these are destined for London. The last time we saw such a concentration of new technology at a bus and coach show was back in the mid 1990s, with the rush to low-floor models.

Of course we’ve seen new environmentally-friendly technology before – such as CNG and LPG – but this time it’s serious, with Transport for London calling the shots.

Which makes it an appropriate time for the publication of Bus and Coach Professional's Environment & Innovation supplement, which is launched at Euro Bus Expo. In it we review some of the actions, large and small, which the industry is doing to further improve its already impressive environmental performance.

This industry – operators, manufacturers and suppliers – has a strong environmental message to spread. And now, more than ever before, the climate is right for doing it.
