Stagecoach support for Manchester TIF
STAGECOACH has underlined its commitment to Greater Manchester’s transport strategy with the announcement that it is adding 108 Alexander Dennis Enviro400 double-deckers to its Manchester fleet, at a cost of £15million. The first entered service this month. The new Euro 4 Enviros follow earlier deliveries of Euro 3 models to Stagecoach Manchester.
Mark Threapleton, managing director of Stagecoach Manchester and chairman of the Greater Manchester Bus Operators’ Association, says: "These new buses will bring investment in our bus fleet in the city to nearly £21million in just two years as part of our drive to get Manchester back on board the bus.
"We are fully behind Greater Manchester’s vision for a high-quality, integrated public transport network for the region and its bid for a major public transport investment package from the government’s Transport Innovation Fund."
Stagecoach says that the number of full fare paying bus passengers on its services has increased by more than 30 per cent in the last 10 years. It consistently operates more than 99 per cent of its scheduled services in Manchester and more than 92 per cent arrive within five minutes of the scheduled time.
But it warns that traffic congestion and other delays on the road, such as roadworks and poor or illegal parking, remain serious problems. Over the last 12 months, the average speed of buses has reduced by a further 2 per cent to just 10mph, bringing the total reduction in the last 10 years to 14 per cent.
Manchester’s TIF bid outlines radical plans to improve public transport and ease congestion, including a sophisticated – and controversial - road pricing scheme with variable charging rates.
* Independent Manchester operator Bluebird Bus & Coach has pledged to operate a frontline fleet of seven years or younger if the TIF bid succeeds. Owner Mike Dunstan says it has replaced 25 per cent of its fleet of 48 vehicles this year.
