First’s Swansea Metro service launched
The cross-city Swansea service requires ten Wrightbus StreetCars, with the vehicles having been phased in over the last three months.
The Swansea service was originally intended to start in late 2008.
The Swansea ftr metro service has cost around £14million - £10million for infrastructure and £4million for the buses, which have a two-person crew. Where in York and Leeds there was little change to roads to accommodate the ftr service, the Swansea system includes a mile-long bus-only road and extensive bus priorities in the city centre, which should allow First to better demonstrate the potential of ftr.
As in York, the articulated StreetCars in Swansea will be replaced by conventional buses in the evening, a move which cuts operating costs.
