New eight-year contract to be approved for York park-and-ride

York council executive is set to approve a new eight-year contract for its park-and-ride service next week which would see the introduction of three electric double-decks and 11 electric single-decks alongside 24 new Euro 6 vehicles including six artics.

The tender process was re-started earlier this year after the previous attempt failed to get a response from bus operators.

The council has released some details about the new contract including bus allocations to different routes although it has not yet revealed the successful bidder or bidders.

If approved by the executive at a council meeting on Thursday 18 May, the new contract arrangement will commence in February 2018.

In the interim, the existing contract with First York will continue until the end of January 2018.

Three new full-electric double-deck buses will be introduced on the Monks Cross route with the 11 electric single-deck buses used on the Poppleton and Grimston Bar services.

The new contract will also encourage longer visits to the city with overnight parking at two park-and-ride sites as well as additional Sunday opening hours for special events.

York claims that its network, which carried 4.6 million passengers in 2016, is one of only a handful of park-and-ride operations which returns revenue back to the council; it generated £39,000 in 2017/18. However, lower projected income in 2018/19 means it will need to allocate an additional £85,000 in its budget in that year.
