The Sustainable Bus Awards 2020 were presented at Busworld with the Mercedes- Benz eCitaro winning the Urban category and Iveco Bus Crossway NP NF, and VDL FHD2 winning in the Intercity and Coach sections’ respectively.
The eCitaro is the first battery electric bus from Stuttgart with series production having started at the end of 2018, and several cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Oslo and Luxembourg having received it so far. The current Mercedes-Benz eCitaro features lithium-ion batteries for a maximum capacity of 292kWh with a range of around 170km in city operations. The eCitaro will be available with 330kWh batteries by 2021.
The Iveco Bus Crossway Natural Power Normal Floor, a gas-powered vehicle with a 360hp engine, won the Intercity category, and the VDL Futura FHD2 was selected as the most sustainable coach.
The awards jury comprises magazine editors from eight European countries: Mobilités Magazine (France), Busfahrt (Germany), Autobus (Italy), OV-Magazine (Netherlands), InfoBus (Poland), Infotrucker (Romania), Carril Bus (Spain), and Bus and Coach Professional (UK).
The jurors chose the winning vehicles in a process that involved initial shortlists from each country and analysis of detailed documentation on the vehicles provided by the manufacturers.
The award scheme is the first and only European award that acknowledges sustainability of buses and coaches.
